Julia Taylor is a musical theatre writer, songwriter, actor, and singer in New York City. Originally from Los Angeles, she grew up in a musical family and started performing in musicals at a young age. She has continued to explore her love of music and theatre ever since, performing in plays and musicals as a student at UC Berkeley and in several local theatre productions after graduating. In college, she wrote an original full-length musical that was selected and produced by Berkeley’s student-run theater company and received positive reviews in the Daily Cal.

Julia completed two years of in-depth work as a lyricist collaborating with multiple composers in the BMI musical theatre writing workshop and is currently a member of the advanced, ongoing BMI writer’s workshop. She previously studied songwriting at New Musicals Inc. and at UCLA Extension. Julia has developed a deep understanding of lyric and song form, structure, and the many elements that need to come together for a successful, original song.

Julia enjoys writing for multiple genres including musical theatre, stand-alone pop songs and singer/songwriter songs. Some of her favorite songs she has written explore themes of female empowerment and self-discovery.

Julia finds that her roots as an actor and singer complement her writing. When she writes, she considers the performer and what they would want out of the writing. Conversely, when she performs, she understands and seeks to deliver on the writer’s intentions while also making the role her own.

Julia enjoys running through the trees in Prospect Park, Brooklyn in all seasons and lighting up her body and mind with an intense hot yoga practice. She believes that a spiritual practice cultivates her fullest expression as an artist.
